We are Sicilians (and some other very good friends) living abroad, but maintaining a strong passion for RagusaShire. This website aims at giving you a different point of view on an amazing piece of Sicily and to help you live it more.
Some years have passed by since we moved away from Ragusa, our hometown. However, we well remember that each time we used to come back, we used to see it with new eyes as often happens to most travelers which stay for long time far from their homeland.
This is one of the reasons why we decided to start this adventure, in order to offer to all of you the most international perspective of a land that only Sicilian people can really and deeply understand.
It is very difficult to describe Sicily to whom never meet her since it contains so many spirits and characters. Therefore, we need to steel the words of a great Sicilian writer of the 20th’s century, Gesualdo Bufalino, who used to say:
Atlases say that Sicily is an island and it should be true: atlases are honorable books. But you could doubt of it when you think that the (traditional) concept of “island” corresponds to a compact group of races and customs, while here everything is odd, mixed and changing like in the most hybrid continent. True is that there are many Sicilies, we will never finish to count them.
Of this infinitive territory, we will tell you about a piece of land that is radically anchored in the deep of our heart. “Ragusa Shire”, which is the name given by English people to this territory, is the part of Sicily located in the southern (where Ragusa Ibla, Modica and Scicli – among other beauties – are located) and that one that, traditionally, used to be the most difficult area to reach by foreigners as well as the Italian people until few years ago.
Fortunately (or unfortunately), in the last years many things have changed. Among others, a beautiful harbor was construed in Marina di Ragusa and an old airport was reopened in Comiso. Now, the beautiful Ragusa Shire is around the corner for everyone.
A journey like this aims at explaining to the visitors places under a light of costumes and traditions, since the “Sicilian culture” from my point of view, is one of the most important discovery of visiting Ragusa Shire (to have a slight taste of what it is waiting for you, we would like to invite you to have a look at the website of my friends of Siculamente, to find some revisited milestones of our culture).
